Aural Postcard: Jack in the Box

Fresh from a recent trip to the US comes the story of Jack in the Box. What gave me the idea to document this particular experience was the colourful sonic environment of the front till/cash and kitchen at the joint. I was struck by how much that soundscape was similar and reminded me of one of the favourite sites of research and study – the emergency room. Full of alarms, high energy shouting and split-second rhythm of activity, it is remarkably similar, and even sounds similar, yet its purpose – couldn’t be farther from saving lives. It’s a kind of death by cholesterol. Also, JitB – not all that it’s cracked out to be. Even for fast food it’s pretty gross.
